So I emailed friend
today nd explained that the only way I could think of to describe this series and explained that the only way I could think of to describe this series to imagine tossing Mean Girls The Craft both of the cheesy teen movie persuasion into blender with the whole Harry Potter English boarding school concept just to see what comes out And what results is A Bollywood Affair anddicting fast paced story that is difficult to put down I m ctually bit shocked by how engrossing this story has become Libba Bray wields literary red herrings uite masterfully nd I was guessing nd gasping right up until the very end Series review video It s only The Scent of Rosa's Oil a few weeks since I read this but I have since finished the seriesnd m lowering my rating of this book from 2 stars to 1 star because the things I found to be problematic were never redeemed nd I cannot overlook themOriginal reviewThere were things I didn t like than I liked which causes it to fall just below Nobodys Angel (Willow Park, a middle of the road ratingTL DR Predictable run of the mill historical fiction with occasional magical elementsnd fat shaming nd mishandled self harm nd sexual ssault But yep I m gonna finish the series because I m ddicted to udiobooksLet s start with the good Gemma is delightful character Her naivety is fitting of the time period but she Defending Hearts also has healthy dose of spunk which keeps her connected with modern readers This book tries to tackle racism nd feminism in the historic setting They re kind of lightly treated due to the time period but still present nd t times some wonderful points re made For 2005 this series was probably really greatAnd now the bad If I d read this when it was published I probably would have enjoyed it uite bit but I don t think that the suspense of the plot or the magical elements stand up to other books in this genre today It definitely does nothing to set itself part from ny run of the mill historical romance Yes there s Feel the Heat (Phoenix Agency, a fantasy element here but when Gemma was in the real world just living her life like 70% of the book this felt likeny duke debutante fiction I read pproximately 896437 historical romance novels when I was younger nd the reason I don t read those Sudden Fury (The Last Gunfighter, any is becausefter reading that many they Spiky arell SO predictable This book was no exception to that In terms of the fantasy element nd the mystery of the plot too much time was spent pointing fingers nd not ctually cting on leads but going to dances instead For Dungeon of Death almost 600 pages Gemma thinks she has everythingll figured out she doesn t so she does very little causing the plot to creep by t snail s pace But hey Love Rockets at least there is lot of shopping nd kissing nd FAT SHAMING Ann to pass the time Gemma constantly ignores A Deceptive Homecoming (Hattie Davish Mystery, all the gooddvice she s given nd ignores her gut instincts to go do something COMPLETELY STUPID Every other character Gemma don t stray off the path Gemma I know I shouldn t stray off the path nd my gut twists but wow that patch of woods looks ever so inviting so tralalaGemma friends Well this was terrible idea nd now we re ll going to dieRepeat 4 timesIt was infuriating to read bout these girls constantly being warned bout the magic but instead of trying to do nything bout it they just want to play round go for picnics in the realms The Hired Man and use the magic to be beautifulAnd lastly let s talkbout the truly problematic The treatment of the character Ann was bsolutely ppalling in both how her friends treat her nd how she is written Ann is poor overweight nd ugly The 3 cardinal sins in London society Oh the horror She spends just Almost A Gentleman about every moment of her time on the page bemoaning the fact that she isn t beautiful AND SO DO HER FRIENDS Gemma is much kinder to Ann than Felicity is but even Gemma isn t immune to taking jabst Ann Felicity freuently makes comments bout how Ann eats too much even though Gemma gets way with wanting n extra dessert because her figure is thinner The worst for me was scene where Ann was insulting herself nd Felicity tells her to stop doing that to herself because how is nyone else ever going to ccept Ann if she can t ccept herself But then Felicity is back to dogging on Ann s weight nd looks in the next scene Good lord if I have to hear One Time About How The Waist Of time bout how the waist of dress needed to be let out 500 miles I will strangle this fictional bAnd the problem is Ann is written to deserve this Every ounce of her dialogue oozes with stupidity And let s not even talk Here by the Bloods about the voicecting in the udiobook Sigh She s lways the last to catch on Because of course on top of being ugly she has to be stupid too nd therefore the reader is supposed to roll their eyes look down on her nd believe she deserves this treatment Because haha fat ol Ann is lways ruining things Now let s discuss Ann s self harm This isn t relevant to the plot so I don t consider it spoiler In book 1 Gemma discovers that Ann cuts her rms She has explicitly said that she does this because of the way she s treated by everyone but fter she joins the friend group we re led to believ. ,
E Ann is fixed Well now in book 2 Gemma discovers Ann has Cutting Herself Again cutting gain though she currently seemed happy nd had everything going for her Gemma says promise me you ll stop that And Ann halfheartedly promises Her cutting is never brought up Bound (Torn Trilogy, againThe problem here is that TWICE it isssumed that Ann is magically fixed First by gaining friends nd then by this promise Gemma never gain checks in with Ann nd never does nything to prevent the bullying that Ann has explicitly said is trigger for her This is brushed side nd seems present only to
