RperCollins for providing an advanced eaders copy of this book for me to ead in exchange for my honest eview My book ish Blog Insta What we ve got here is a failure to communicate This uote from the 1967 film COOL HAND LUKE basically sums up how I m feeling after eading this book And I ve never even seen the movie The uote just came to me as a thing I know somehow deep from within the pop culture ecesses of my mind There s a lot of useless information in thereI might also go with in the galaxy of This Sucks Camel Dicks Stepbrothers 2008What I mean to say is I wish the publishers hadn t stuffed this novel into the psychological thriller genre just because that s where all the cool kids are and had instead been honest about what this book is a dark omance meets women s fiction meets soap opera intrigue with a terrible TERRIBLE messageIt s not a thriller I m sorry but no I am not thrilledHad I known this from the start I would have passed on eading it because this level of dramatic soap opera nutty ness is just not my thing It lacks humour and humanity and is overpopulated with terrible one liners cliches and silly dialogue and tropes that feel like a eenactment And the writing is derivative and basicNot to mention the internal misogyny that permeates the entire theme gets my feminist hackles upAnywayI didn t know I shouldn t ead this so I did and now I have library late fees and a shitty eview to write so buckle in bitches This could get mildly spoiler y because I m going to ant so if you e super excited to ead this here s my takeaway Don t waste your time with this unless you e cool with domestic abuse Otherwise ead onFirst of all this is boring That s the most concise way to describe it It s slow with dull scenes and so overtly dramatic in its boring elements that it becomes comical and cheesy Ohhhhhh ich people events with wildly cliche conversation More descriptions of fancy clothes and designer labels and expensive underwear and boats and bikinis and hot bodies Please please tell me again what else these people are spending their excessive amounts of money onFor the first third of the book we follow Amber Patterson as she enacts her plan to steal someone s ich powerful husband Amber is a one dimensional douchecanoe who is absolutely agonizing to ead She s a hateful conniving con artist for seemingly no eal eason other than she grew up poor and believes she deserves betterand the only way to get better is with buttloads of moneyShe has zero edeeming ualities not even a modicum of a sympathetic trait She s absolutely spiteful in her self ighteous belief that she could be a better ich asshole than all the other ich assholes Like there s some kind of virtue in aspiring to be the absolute worstAmber teaches herself about everything that a cultured person would apparently know She eads The Odyssey and becomes an amateur sommelier and learns about eal estate and art and hedge funds You d think that someone who is that driven and smart would want to go to University and aspire to be a CEO in charge of her own money with her own power But no Amber just wants to be a ich wife because that s the kind of superficial world this book takes place in YawnnnnShe s a completely insufferable character and you truly start to wonder what the authors were thinking in their creation of her until the book switches over to the POV of Daphne Parrish the woman who s husband Amber is intent on stealing I was honestly so elieved when I left Amber behind I wasn t sure how much of her I could take Daphne from Amber s perspective has it all From the beautiful kids the nanny takes care of to the closet full of designer clothes the fleet of cars and a private chef and estate sized mansion and expensive vacations down to powerful wealthy husband who all and who is of course gorgeous and every woman wants him Mr Jackson ParrishListen Elon Musk might be able to buy himself hair but he can t make himself hot That s the balance of the universe It s ealityUnderneath the opulence and money however Jackson is a controlling abusive waste of oxygen There are small hints leading up to the change in POV that there is something dark about Jackson but the shift in perspective brings it all apidly to the forefront of the story because it is the forefront of Daphne s lifeOkay I shouldn t say apidly First we need to get through how Daphne met Jackson their first date meeting the parents and getting married and going on a honeymoon and having a baby and like every other major milestone in a married couple s life before gasp Jackson is eally a total dick punch Say it isn t soNowthis is where I start getting angryUp until this point I was willing to give this book 3 stars call it just so so and kind of Lifetime movie esue and move on with my life Except it is here in the last third of the book that the tagline eally starts to eveal it s true meaning Some women get everything Some the tagline eally starts to eveal it s true meaning Some women get everything Some get everything they deserve What Daphne deserves is to be free of Jackson To egain control of her life the lives of her children and move on from the prison she was living in even if she had everything Okay great Agreed You can t put a price on freedomBut in order for Daphne to escape her personal hell Amber must take her place in her abusive marriage And we as the eaders are supposed to want this We e supposed to cheer this We e supposed to think it s inspiredThis is why the authors created such a one dimensional unsympathetic twat of a character in Amber So that when Daphne s clever plan succeeds and Amber becomes the new Mrs Jackson Parrish we the eader say Yes good She deserves this We e supposed to want a woman to be a victim of domestic abuse because that is a just punishmentAre you fucking kidding meI could see this coming but I hoped it wasn t true I kept my fingers crossed that Daphne and Amber would find a way to join forces and destroy Jackson together I was still hoping I would end up back at a three star ating But nooooooooooI don t care how awful Amber is or how many heartless things she did in pursuit of her goal this is not a thing to wish on someone Prison time Sure that would have looked like justice But I m literally stunned that an active choice was made by the authors to convince eaders that it s fun and entertaining to witness an unlikable character become a victim of domestic abuse and apeAnyone who gave this book 4 or 5 stars eally needs to examine why this twist didn t bother them I mean if you totally loved the book I m not here to judge your eviewbut just think about it Because honestly for as cheesy and boring and soap opera y as this novel is the esolution to Daphne s problems and what Amber deserves is dark and fucked up and no one should be okay with this kind of narrative device one that tells us some women deserve to be victims of abuseIt s sickIt takes a lot for me to hand out one star I save those for flaming piles of shit But I m making an exception in this case I think I kind totally hated this very strongly. On are a couple straight out of a fairy taleAmber’s envy could eat her alive if she didn't have a plan Amber uses Daphne’s compassion and caring to insinuate herself into the family’s life the first step in a meticulous scheme to undermine her Before long Amber is Daphne’s closest confidante traveling to Europe with the Parrishes and their lovely young daughte. The Last Mrs Parrish by Liv Constantine is a 2017 Harperluxe publication Slick shrewd and wickedly devious Daphne meets Amber at the gym where they discover they share a terrible tragedy in common the death of a beloved sister due to Cystic Fibrosis The women though from very different worlds form a close bond Before long Amber has become Daphne s confidante while also working for her CF foundation and even helps Mr Parrish went he needs an assistant But Amber has plans big plans and in order to achieve her goals she will walk over and step on anyone in her path even Daphne This story was chilling clever and sinfully entertaining Amber gets to set the pace in the first half of the book as she describes her cunning and very manipulative This is the first book in a long time that I ve actually HATED There are a number of easons why and some are hard to talk about without giving important things away I ll start with what I can safely say All spoilers have been hiddenFirstly this book is so slow and boring Especially in the first half where we stay inside the mind of the despicable con artist Amber Patterson as she plants herself into the life of Daphne Parrish and tries to steal her ich husband There are a good two hundred pages of lunch dates designer dresses charity This is a fantastic book with only three characters Husband wife and home wrecker It s no spoiler to tell you that Amber Patterson is the home wrecker and a self avowed woman on a mission Motivated mostly by her wish to be tremendously wealthy Amber is determined to OUTRIGHT steal Jackson Parrish away from his sweet beautiful wife Daphne What ensues is unbelievably fun to ead about Deliciously wickedFirst what I love about this bookThe story is entertaining and addictive I couldn t put it downThe writing is effortless easy and flows at a naturally fast paceThe structure of the book is perfect The first third is Amber s POV the second is Daphne s and the third part is a bit of a combination conclusion I enjoyed Daphne s section so much than Amber s And the best part THE LAST MRS PARRISH has one of the most satisfying endings to a story I ve ead in a long timeWhat I don t likeThis book is too long Even though it eads fast for a 400 page book there is too much fat Where are those editors when you need one For the first half of the book we get an up close continuous description of how the one percent lives and that starts to get tiringOk we get it Jackson Parrish is super duper ich and buys very expensive clothes shoes and jewelry for Mrs Parrish If you e into designer brand names etc you will enjoy eading about the trappings and joys of wealth And that s not a bad thing But if you tire of this part persevere until the second half where the plot eally picks upAside from not eally feeling a connection to the characters there is also not any suspense in this book There is a mild twist but you will probably not be that surprisedAll of these negatives are only because my expectations were that this would be a twisted psychological thriller I mean it says it ight there on the book jacketIt s my opinion that this book is mis categorized I would call it women s fiction I hate chick lit It is VERY light on the psychological suspense and there is not a thriller vibe or shocking mystery to solveOverall this is a very fun book to ead most people will love it and I m betting it is going to be very popularThe strange thing isit is almost the exact same plot line from THE WIFE BETWEEN US by Greer Hendricks which is the book I ead just before this one CaaaarazzzzyIn contrast THE WIFE BETWEEN US is a much darker tighter twisted story and I did give it all the stars That book doesn t come out until january 2018 i will post out until January 2018 I will post eview on closer to publicationTHE LAST MRS PARRISH is scheduled for US publication today October 17 It has a gorgeous cover and I want to thank the lovely Chelsea Humphrey from for gifting it to me as part of a giveawayAvailable TODAY on sale at The Last Mrs Parrish A Novel To be honest I almost feel I am being generous with two stars but then I did finish it so I wouldn t think it ight to give it an even lower ating There was something about The Last Mrs Parrish that made it a very easy ead but that just wasn t enough My disappointment in the book eally comes from my dislike for the characters or at the very least my apathy towards them Amber is despicable but her bad personality is written so overtly there is no mystery no build up of atmosphere to give the story some tension The author tells us all about Amber s sneakiness instead of just showing itwhich uins the suspense in my opinion I could even get on board when the protagonist is unlikable as long as there is some ambiguity yet there was none of that here Added to that Amber s goal is eally just to be ich which is too superficial and not interesting enough to make her a compelling character I did feel for Daphne however I also felt her character was fairly bland and her part in the story not excitingThe mystery itself was so predictable that I kept thinking Is this it The book is also just shy of 400 pages which is too long given the ather minimal amount of actual plot Though as I say the writing is easy and makes the book very eadable the author does make use of many a clich and in several cases I thought do people eally talkthink like this She loved the feel of this singularly superior vehicle is just one example of awkward unrealistic language which I found to be a little irritatingI know I am being hard on this book and maybe unfairly so since many eaders loved it but after all the attention it eceived I had hoped for something exciting and inventive than I got All that being said it s probably a decent vacation ead or even a
